How many squares fit in a 20-yard
For asphalt shingles, plan on a 20-yard handling roughly 25 to 30 squares of single-layer tear-off. That's a comfortable fit for most single-story ramblers and split-levels in Sandy, Murray, Taylorsville, and Kearns. A two-layer tear-off halves that: 12 to 15 squares per bin. A big two-story on the Holladay or Cottonwood Heights bench with two layers of architectural shingles will need a swap mid-job, and it's better to plan it than to call it in at 2 p.m. with the crew standing on a full bin. Tell us the square count and layer count when you book and we'll size and schedule the swap up front.
Weight, and why shingles are different
Shingles are the heaviest common load we haul by volume. A square of three-tab weighs around 200 to 250 pounds; architectural runs heavier. Twenty squares of single-layer three-tab is already over two tons, so a full 20-yard of shingles will exceed the included ton. That's not a problem; it's just math, and we'd rather you know it up front. Overage is $75 per ton straight from the landfill scale ticket, attached to the invoice. If you want a predictable number for the homeowner, ask us for a per-square estimate before the job and we'll give you one.
Placement before tear-off
Most roofers book the bin for the afternoon before the job so it's on site at 7 a.m. We stage it tight to the house on the side the crew will drop from, with boards under both rails. If the driveway is steep, send a photo and we'll confirm the truck can retrieve it safely. The bin has a rear door, so a crew can wheelbarrow in from ground level instead of throwing over the side. Street placement is possible in most cities with a permit, but the driveway is faster and needs none.
Storm response
After a wind or hail event, the roofers who already have accounts with us get first call on containers. If you expect to run more than a handful of jobs a month, set up the account now so the paperwork isn't in the way when the phone starts ringing. Net 30, volume pricing at 5 and 10 boxes per month, and a service agreement at the 10-plus tier that locks the rate for the year.
